28 aug is the date in the Guinness Book of Records of the record long team horse
driving. Ysbrand Chardon en Jan Kuipers improved the record of Piet de Boer with four more horses till 30
horses in front of one coach : 20 from Chardon and 10 from Kuipers.
Ysbrand Chardon (yes, the, since many years, worldchampion 4 in-hand-driving) on the driving seat
It was a trilling happening: starting with the harnessing, fixing the reins, together 700 metres long.
Should all the horses keep standing quiet? They did, and it took about an hour:
"They are fixing the 11th team ", now they are doing the 15th"" etc,
The training. loose driving took more time, Chardon did step and stop again,
something did not fit, the the most hind team stepped away every time sideways.
Jan Kuipers said later that he doubted that moment, if they would succeed.
Stepping and stopping again. Ysbrand decided to change the last team of horses
with another team. From then on every horse walked fine.
One hour behind the schedule and four hours after the start of the harnessing, the whole
train entered the centre grounds
The horses were partly steered by voice. A wireless microphone send the commands of the driver to the loudspeakers. The front team of horses drove with nuch intelligence
if the procession behind them took the curves to broad, they corrected their course sideways.
Several times the train changed hands ( left or right curve direction) by an S-curve through the middle.
Always the horses were trotting, not stepping and they left the field trotting in a strong elongated way
with much applause from the public.
Jan Kuipers and Ysbrand Chardon showed with this trial how trained and obedient their horses are!
